Morant was born in Dalzell, South Carolina, on August 10, 1999. He is currently a handsome 23-year-old man. Tee and Jamie Morant are his parents. His mother, Jamie, was a high school point guard and a college softball player, while his father was Ray Allen’s high school teammate and played basketball for Claflin University. Tee considered playing professional basketball overseas after playing semi-professionally. When Jamie became pregnant with Ja, he gave up his basketball career and became a barber. He averaged 27 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists per game in his last two seasons at Crestwood, earning South Carolina Class 3A All-State honors both years. Morant graduated from high school as the All-Region Most Valuable Player three times (MVP). He couldn’t dunk until he was in his senior year.

He attended Murray State University, where he was a consensus first-team All-American as a sophomore in 2019. Despite being named All-Region Most Valuable Player three times and earning All-State honors at Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina, Morant was only lightly recruited by NCAA Division I programs and was unranked by recruiting services. Nonetheless, as a freshman, he made an immediate impact at Murray State University, earning first-team all-Ohio Valley Conference honors (OVC). He had a breakout sophomore season, winning OVC Player of the Year and leading the NCAA in assists. Morant also became the first player in NCAA history to average 20 points and 10 assists per game in a single season as a sophomore.
