After retiring from football, Brendan Schaub moved back to Colorado and started training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and boxing. He entered an amateur boxing match and won the Colorado novice-division Golden Gloves heavyweight title after only six months of training. Schaub was born and grew up in Aurora, Colorado, by his American father Peter Schaub and English mother Debra. He has English, German, and Italian ancestry. He has one brother named Jay Schaub. He was not offered any sports college scholarships, but he was accepted to both the Whittier College football squad and lacrosse team after trying out for both.
He transferred to the University of Colorado before his junior year in order to play football there full-time, where he redshirted his first season.
