US tournament – “Very special victory!” Alcaraz dismantles Medvedev in the Indian Wells final GuardianMagazines

It took him a while to find his game in the final in Indian Wells. But then Carlos Alcaraz showed an impressive performance against Daniil Medvedev. He won the final 7:6 (5), 6:1.

The result looks clear for defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. It was too. Daniil Medvedev actually got off to a perfect start. The Russian immediately got the break and started the match more aggressively than usual. The Russian had also moved his return position forward. The surprise effect worked. 3:0 for Medvedev.

But Alcaraz got used to the Russian’s new style of play and got the break back at 1:3. After that it became a “normal” match. None of the players gave up their service again in the first round and it went to a tie-break.

Here Alcaraz dominated the action from the first point and was the more aggressive player. That paid off. He quickly led 5:2 and finally took the first round 7:5 after a forehand longline error.

Carlos Alcaraz: In the second sentence it was all of a piece

At the start of set two, Alcaraz made Medvedev and, like the Russian in the previous round, got the break at the start of the set. 3-0 for the Spaniard. Now Medvedev, who had a fight with a few spectators in the second set, no longer had much to counter the Spaniard’s power. And Alcaraz made almost no mistakes. With the double break to make it 5:1, the Spaniard finally made the decision.

In the end it was 7:6 (5) and 6:1 for Carlos Alcaraz, who was able to impressively defend his 2023 title.

In the interview afterwards, Alcaraz, for whom it was the first tournament victory since his Wimbledon victory in 2023, said on the court: “This is a very special victory for me. Before the tournament I didn’t know exactly where I stood. I could hardly train either and was unsure whether my ankle would hold up. The win will give me confidence and I’m very happy that I can play at this level again.”
