Franke died at the age of 83 in a nursing home in Bernau near Berlin. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported.

Franke started his sports career as an ice hockey player for Dynamo Weißwasser. He won bronze at the European Championships in 1966 with the GDR team. In 1973, the Saxon began his career as a speed skating coach and later trained Pechstein, among others.

Franke looked after the Berliner for a total of 16 years. The now 52-year-old won five Olympic victories and six world championship titles under Franke.
