For the goalkeeper it is his return after a break of more than a year with the national team. The 37-year-old missed the entire 2023 international match year because of his complicated leg fracture. Nagelsmann is expected to name him number one for the European Championships in the summer in a duel with Marc-André ter Stegen.

DFB with humor against criticism of the pink EM jersey

Sunday, March 17th, 2:51 p.m.: The German Football Association was prepared for the reactions on social media with the new, pink national jersey. The association and supplier Adidas released another marketing video on Sunday, which particularly poked fun at the criticism of the national team’s away jersey in the year of the home European Championship.

In the pre-produced video, several sayings that were still felt on the day of the shoot are shown, such as: “Nobody wants that jersey” and “That’s not a Germany jersey.” The national players react with humor and irony. At the end of the video, Florian Wirtz responded to the criticism that it wasn’t a Germany jersey: “Yes, it is.” The video was widely discussed on social networks on Sunday, mostly with positive reactions.

The DFB and Adidas presented the jerseys last Thursday. In contrast to the away jersey, the home jersey is traditionally primarily white. The new jerseys should be used in the first international matches of the European Championship year on March 23rd France and three days later against the Netherlands be worn. In the past few days there has been some very unobjective criticism of the color of the away jersey on social media.

In the second marketing video after the presentation on Thursday, the DFB also included a small tip against the men’s selection less than three months before the opening game of the European Championship. “Is that a women’s jersey?” is asked in a voice-over, before national player Jule Brand, wearing the away jersey in pink-purple tones and a diamond-shaped pattern, answers: “I don’t know, it doesn’t look like eight European Championship titles to me yet.” The women’s team has won eight European Championship titles so far, compared to three for the men’s national team.

Daum would not have brought Kroos back into the national team

Thursday, March 14th, 5:53 a.m.: Former master coach Christoph Daum is critical of the return of Rio world champion Toni Kroos (34) to the German national soccer team. “I wouldn’t have made this decision. (…) Toni Kroos will not come here to fight for a place, but rather has a regular playing spot guaranteed. And that is always a bit, almost dangerous, for the cohesion in the team,” said Daum to the TV station RTL/ntv.

Nevertheless, the quality of the Real Madrid midfielder is undisputed, said the 70-year-old. “What he has won and how he performs as a person is outstanding. Who dares to say, I don’t want Kroos in a national team? Yeah, I still wouldn’t invite him.”

Kroos resigned from the DFB team after the 2021 European Championship and 106 international matches. In February, the 2014 world champion announced his return to the DFB team. He will play for national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team at the international matches in France and against the Netherlands in March.

DFB hammer! Nagelsmann cuts the Bayern star and almost all BVB players from the squad

3:42 p.m.: What changes does Julian Nagelsmann make in the first international matches of the European Championship year? The national coach apparently nominates four professionals from VfB Stuttgart. There should be a new debutant from Bayern, but Nagelsmann will do without another star from the record champions. However, only one player from Borussia Dortmund is said to be there.

Lothar Matthäus advises DFB coach Nagelsmann to make debuts

Tuesday, March 12, 10:30 a.m.: Despite his good performances at FC Bayern Munich in the Football Bundesliga Youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic is not yet a candidate for the senior national team for Lothar Matthäus. “He played great recently, you have to acknowledge that, but you shouldn’t turn the boy’s head,” said record national player Matthäus in his “Sky” column. The 19-year-old Pavlovic is not “already a candidate for the national team,” said Matthäus one day before his international nomination for the upcoming games in France and against the Netherlands.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann has no need for Pavlovic, who has recently been repeatedly linked to the national team. “With returning Toni Kroos, captain Ilkay Gündogan, Leon Goretzka and Pascal Groß, there are enough candidates to play in the six or eight position,” said the record national player.

To achieve this, Nagelsmann should change his defense and nominate not only Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt) again, but also Waldemar Anton from VfB Stuttgart for the first time. “I would definitely invite him because he is also a leader type,” said Matthäus about Anton, who, according to media reports, like his teammates Maximilian Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav, is about to be called up for his debut in the senior national team.

Matthäus can also imagine that there will be debutants on the offensive: “Perhaps the national coach will take a look at Jan-Niklas Beste (FC Heidenheim) and Maximilian Beier (TSG Hoffenheim). “Both have drawn attention recently and both have something that perhaps one or the other doesn’t have, such as dangerous standards and speed,” said Matthäus.

Sky: Nagelsmann brings four Stuttgart players into the DFB squad EM-Tests

Monday, March 11, 5:41 p.m.: After flying high in the Bundesliga, a quartet from VfB Stuttgart can apparently also prove themselves in the national team. As the broadcaster Sky reported on Monday without citing sources, Waldemar Anton, Maximilian Mittelstädt and Deniz Undav are part of the DFB squad for the first time for the European Championship test internationals on March 23rd in Lille against France and three days later in Frankfurt against the Netherlands. Chris Führich (26), who made his international debut in October, should therefore be called up again.

Rettig on national coach question: Klopp “not an issue”

11:34 a.m.: DFB managing director Andreas Rettig can well imagine a longer-term future with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and has not yet made any contact with Jürgen Klopp. “You don’t send a successful national coach away…” Rettig said in one Interview von „Focus Online„. With a view to the home European Championships (June 14th to July 14th), the 60-year-old official did not want to commit to a specific round that Nagelsmann had to reach with the national team.

“I’m not one of those who dictates rankings now. It would be important that our hearts reach out to us. “That wouldn’t be bad,” said Rettig. Nagelsmann initially has a contract until the European Championships. In the preliminary round, the national team, which has been weak in recent tournaments, faces Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland. “Fourth in the preliminary round at a home European Championship would certainly not be a good application letter,” clarified Rettig.

Rettig called Nagelsmann’s interaction with the team, the coaching staff and the sports director “impressive”. Meanwhile, there have been no discussions with successful coach Klopp, whose era at Liverpool FC ends this summer. “We respect what he and his management have said. He wants to have a break and that’s why it’s not an issue,” said Rettig. When asked, he specified: “There was no contact. He gave himself a break.”
